Dragon boat and milk-carton boat races and tours of naval ships are big attractions for children. Chandigarh: Colourful roses will be in full bloom at Chandigarh’s 36th annual rose festival, which begins on Friday.

The Rose Garden, located in Sector 16 here, is the largest of its kind in Asia. The garden, also called Zakir Rose garden, is named after the late president Zakir Hussain.

The three-day festival attracts thousands of visitors from the city and adjoining states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Scores of tourists from other parts of the country and foreign lands come to see the festival. The Rose Festival attracts many tourists from Bulgaria and abroad every year and is one of the most famous traditional events in the country.

The rose festival’s strong ties to Portland history, this year’s History & Roses Tour presented by Windermere showcases a selection of vintage Portland area homes, landmarks and gardens. Each location has its own tradition or historical significance involving the rose festival and offers a glimpse of early Portland life when the festival was young.

The flowers are harvested in mid-feb, an event celebrated in the colorful and sweet-smelling rose festival, which draws around 20,000 people to the small town.
